How Big God Is

Psalms is a book of poetry and songs.  Psalms 139 reminds us of characteristics of God.  He is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresence, sovereign, eternal, and unchanging.  Freedom is surrendering to God.  Being a fugitive on the run from God is self punishment.

  • Psalms 139:1-6 - God knows us so well that he knows the words we will speak before we speak.  To God there are no generic people.  He knows us as if we were the only one.  He knows us so well that he sees our motives.

  • Psalms 139:7-12 - God is everywhere, he is not regional.  Jeremiah 23:24 says of God, "Do I not fill heaven and earth?."  He is not located in a specific place.  Although we express God is in heaven, His presence is more like that of the earth's atmosphere that encapsulates the whole earth.

  •  Psalms 139:13-18 - Here we are reminded that life is present before birth.  The tragedy of abortion is the taking of life.  Genesis 1:27 tells us that we are create in the image of God.  To take a human life is to disrespect (dis) God.

  • Psalms 139:19-22 - In this portion there is a change is attitude on the part of David.  He goes from expressing his awe of God to seeking punishment from God for his enemies.  It is interesting that there is no response from God.

  • Psalms 139:23-24 - Finally, David ask God to search his heart, know my thoughts, and show me the grievous ways within.  Lead me in the way everlasting.
