Isaiah 42:1-9, Matthew 1:18-26, 2:13-15, 19-23, Luke2:41-52

Advent is pushing back the busy secular season.  Christmas really is about the incarnation.  Christ came because we messed up.  Christmas honors the last sacrifice when Joy, Peace, and Justice came.  So in this Advent message let's look at the man Joseph, the husband of Mary.

The No Halo Saint, Joseph

  • Joseph is what we would label as the strong silent type.  No words of his are recorded, just actions.

  • God invites Joseph to take action when instructed to take Mary as his wife.  He had no earthly defense for his action.  This stigma followed them.  Read John 8:41

  • Joseph obeyed the orders in the dream immediately.

  • Both Mary and Joseph were told that the baby was to be named Jesus.  No argument on that one.

  • When the angel appeared to Joseph in a dream to leave for Egypt he did so immediately; he got up in the middle of the night and left.  Immediate obedience.  The trip to Egypt was an example of helpless obedience.

  • There probably wasn't a lot usual about Jesus' childhood.  Even when he stayed back in the temple, when his mother found him "Mary goes all Jewish mother on Him.

  • When being obedient to God we must be willing to give up our plans.
