Idolatry

Isaiah 40:18-26

Monotheistic religions do not have idols.  God, knowing mans heart, strictly prohibits idolatry.   The first two commandments prohibit any other gods or graven images.  Our tendency is to seek alternatives to God that we can see when we don't see or feel the presence of God.  We look for something else to replace God.

Items that can become idols that we see or feel that replace God that replace of obstruct God in our lives.

  • Security and/or financial security

  • Positions power, status or prominence

  • Significance, adventure or popularity

  • Love in its many forms and/or desire to be respected

Solutions to temptations of idols

  • Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.  I Peter 5:7
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:19

  • The greatest among you shall be you servant.  Matthew 23:11
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.  James 4:10

  • But godliness with contentment is great gain,  I Timothy 6:6

  • Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:  sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness,
    which is idolatry.  Colossians 3:5

Hope in the Lord is an alternative to idols.
