The Jesus Prayer

I Peter 1:3-9

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."  It is modeled after the prayers of the tax collector, the blind man, and 10 Leper in Luke 18:13-18:38-17:13.  It is simply yet a profound recognition of our own sinfulness and need of a savior.  See I John 1:8.

Comments:

  • The point of the prayer is to quiet our heart and mind.

  • We should dwell on each word as we pray.

  • The Jesus prayer is not meant to empty the mind but to fill it.

  • Pray it several times a day with meaning.  Don't be like the heathen in Matthew 6:7

  • Praying it often is a way of helping us to pray without ceasing.  I Thessalonians 5:17
