The Parable of the Sower

Matthew 13:1-23

Question, what would you have thought the parable meant if you had been ask to explain before Jesus gave the explanation?  Why didn't Jesus explain the parable when he gave it?  Could it be the desired outcome.  Was Jesus' goal to get the maximum intellectual ascent?  NO.  It was meant for the true seeker.  The true seekers are the ones whose intellectual understanding is coupled and completed with a heart commitment.  It is probably safe to say that most in the crowd were not true seekers.

Why did many not understand?  Because

  • seeing they do not see

  • hearing they do not hear

  • there is no understanding in their heart

The Types of Soil

  • There is the Rocky soil which receives the word but because its root does not penetrate self the word immediately dies when hard times come.

  • There is the thorny ground where the root takes hold but results never come because the cares and desires of this world are more important.

  • There is the good soil where the seeing see and the hearing hear and the understanding take heed.  These are the ones that bear kingdom fruit in multiple amounts.

We live at the mercy of our ideas.  It shapes our world view.  We should be living a life rich towards God.  True happiness is living a life pleasing to God.  Remember, what pleases man is detestable to God.  Lord, help us recognize the state of our heart.
