Midday at the Oasis

John 4:1-42

This message is about Jesus' Midday encounter with the Samaritan women at Jacob's well.  The Samaritans were of mixed marriage with Syrians and religious.  They followed the Pentateuch; the first five books of the Old Testament.

When Jesus asked her for a drink it surprised her.  Jesus wasn't afraid of being contaminated.  Their conversation shows the struggle the women was having trying to understand the spiritual nature of living water in the physical context of the body needing water to survive.  Also, she pushed back for validity in what they believed.  In this case you might say that when the things get dry she push the roots deeper.  However, the place where you worship isn't the real issues.  It is difficult of win a religious argument with the Son of God.

It is kind of understood that she was not considered a moral women.  Probably not adultery because they did believe in stoning for such offenses.  The man she was living with at time she was not married to.  Notice in this exchange the humility that Jesus showed in pointing these things out.

Like Jesus, when we interact with the world we should have a cleansing effect on them.  It should not be the other way around where the world draws us into uncleanlyness.
