Jesus Takes the Role as a Servant

John 13:1-17, Luke 22:24-27

John chapters 13-17 is know as the upper room discourse.  In John 13 Jesus performed the work of a servant in washing the disciples feet. Luke Chapter 22 records an argument the disciples had over who would be the greatest.  Jesus' reply and action point to the role of servant hood.

Why Did Jesus Wash His Disciples Feet?

  • He wanted to identify with them.

  • He wanted to set an example.

  • He loved his own.  His expressions of love for His disciples is overwhelming.

How Does Jesus Wash Us Today?

  • We are cleansed by the word.  John 15:3

  • The church is sanctified by having been cleansed by the washing of water with the word.  Ephesians 5:26.
