Preparatory Message

Psalm 51:1-12, I Corinthians 11:17-34, Colossians 1:19-20

Preparatory service is a reminder to examine ourselves before communion.  In our tradition it is the Sunday before communion.  No where in the scriptures are we told to have such a service, yet in light of the warnings we are given regarding taking communion unworthily it is appropriate.

Horizontal Relationships:

  • The Apostle Paul had to address an issue where people were coming together to celebrate communion that was more like a community picnic than a common meal.

  • Church is NOT to evidence social distinctions and wealth differences when we come together.

  • Given what we have been through with the Covid-19 pandemic, we should also remember that political difference with those who are also believers do not supersede our relationship to our common Lord.  To do so is to fail to discern the body and blood of the Lord.

  • Failing to discern the body and blood of the Lord will have a negative effect on our witness to the world.  Our witness as a church is to demonstrate our love one for another.

Vertical Relationship:

  • Look to see if you are in the faith; in a right relationship with God.  Is Christ in us.

  • Examining yourself is to ask God to shine his light on us.  Are there any impurities in us.  If honestly ask He will show us what areas needs correction.

  • The goal is to love God with all your heart.  That is the ideal any no one is perfect.  Part of examining yourself is to recognize ones need of mercy.

  • When we examine ourselves and make corrections where necessary we can then have peace with God.
